A Poem by Karen Guevara

When the leaves are vibrant

and green, I crave autumn.

Fallen, drifting in schemes

of color, café y anaranjado.

When the sun is blooming

se me olvida la carisia

of a previous breeze.

I grab a canvas

and paint your picture.

Intento capturar todas las pecas

en tu espalda, like a connect-

the-dots drawing. Trace

and retrace until they’re engraved

like scripture in my personal Bible.

When I face God, on my knees,

le dare seranata agradecida de ti.

For now, I’ll clasp my hands together—

prayers for our sacrament unity,

sent out with the breeze.

Karen Guevara is a Latin American poet who blends both English and Spanish in her poetry. The themes of her poetry revolve around family and oneself. Through her poetry, she aims to be a voice for those in her community who are overlooked. Spanish is her first language, and in her poetry, she invites the world to learn the beauty that exists within it.
